Chhattisgarh CM Sai heads to Delhi for fresh bid to resolve Mahanadi dispute

Raipur, Oct 1(UNI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai left for Delhi on Thursday to attend a meeting convened by union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss a resolution to the long-pending Mahanadi water dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The meeting is a part of continuing efforts at the Centre to find a mutually acceptable way forward on the dispute, which has remained unresolved for years.
Before leaving for Delhi, Sai said both Chhattisgarh and Odisha had assured the Central Water Commission (CWC) in writing that any decision taken by the commission in the broader interests of the two states would be acceptable to them. “We are making sustained efforts to find a solution in the larger interest of both states,” Sai said, expressing confidence that dialogue, coordination and cooperation could help resolve the issue.
The Chief Minister said Chhattisgarh would continue to safeguard its interests while maintaining a cooperative approach towards Odisha. The Centre has also held discussions with the two states earlier, including a meeting chaired by the union Jal Shakti Minister, as part of efforts to move the matter towards a settlement through dialogue and technical consultation.
After his Delhi visit, Sai is scheduled to travel to Singapore to participate in SING Forum-2026, organised by the Singapore Business Federation. Sai said the international forum would provide Chhattisgarh an opportunity to present its development trajectory, industrial capacity, and investment opportunities before global investors and business representatives. During the visit, he is expected to meet investors, entrepreneurs and industry representatives from Singapore to discuss potential investments and business partnerships in the state.
The Chief Minister said that the government wants to position Chhattisgarh among India's major investment destinations, pointing to the state's industrial policy, infrastructure, natural resources, skilled workforce and emerging sectors as areas with investment potential. International investment and technology partnerships, he said, could open up new avenues for industrial growth, jobs and entrepreneurship.
CM Sai also highlighted the need to provide greater opportunities and platforms to young people from Bastar. He said the region has considerable talent and that the focus should now be on connecting young people with education, sports, skills, innovation, and employment opportunities. The government, he said, wants to identify and support such talent so that young people from Bastar can contribute more fully to the state's development.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the situation following heavy rain and flooding in parts of the state over the past three to four days. According to the government, more than 550 villages in 17 districts and over 22,000 people have been affected. Sai has directed district collectors to complete damage assessments quickly and ensure that eligible families receive assistance under RBC 6-4 without unnecessary delay.
In a separate relief measure, the government has announced an additional Rs 10,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for families whose houses have been damaged in the floods. The amount will be paid in addition to assistance available under RBC 6-4. Collectors have been asked to complete surveys and assessments of affected houses and ensure that the additional assistance reaches eligible families within the prescribed timeframe.
Sai also directed officials to assess damage to crops, livestock and other property promptly and ensure essential services, including drinking water and healthcare, remain available in affected areas. He said relief and rehabilitation efforts should continue with due sensitivity and that every eligible family affected by the floods should receive the assistance due to them.
