SIA raids two Kashmir homes in probe into Myanmar cyber-fraud trafficking network

Srinagar, Oct 1 (UNI) J&K police’s State Investigation Agency (SIA), Kashmir, on Thursday conducted searches at two residential premises in Kulgam district in connection with a probe into an alleged transnational human trafficking network accused of luring unemployed youth with overseas job offers and subsequently exploiting them in cyber fraud operations in Myanmar.
The searches were carried out at the residence of Gulam Nabi Khanday alias Charlie, Mohsin and Jerry Khan of Bungam Chewgam, Kulgam, and Ashiq Hussain Sheikh of Baghpora Yar, Khushipora, Qazigund, SIA said.
The operation was conducted in the early hours pursuant to search warrants issued by a competent court in connection with FIR registered this year at Police Station SIA Kashmir.
During the searches, the agency seized mobile phones, identity-related documents, PAN cards, a passport and job agreements, which are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
SIA said that preliminary investigation has indicated that local facilitators allegedly worked in coordination with foreign-based handlers to lure unemployed and vulnerable youth with promises of overseas employment.
The victims were allegedly transported through Thailand to the Myawaddy region of Myanmar, where they were subsequently exploited and allegedly forced to participate in cyber scam operations.
The SIA is investigating the alleged transnational chain involved in the recruitment, movement, facilitation and exploitation of the victims. The probe is also aimed at identifying the local and overseas linkages and tracing the financial and logistical channels allegedly supporting the network.
The agency said cooperation from national agencies and international partners has been sought in the investigation.
The digital and documentary material seized during the searches will be subjected to detailed examination to establish communication links, financial transactions, recruitment mechanisms and other evidence relevant to the case.
The SIA said the searches were part of its efforts to identify and dismantle the wider network, establish the role of each person involved and safeguard the interests of victims allegedly subjected to trafficking and exploitation.
Further investigation is in progress.
