Chhattisgarh on alert for cyclone Arnab impact

Raipur, Oct 26 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh government today directed district administrations to prepare for possible disruption from Cyclone Arnab between October 27 and 29, with particular attention to the southern Bastar region.
Collectors have been asked to ensure that emergency arrangements are in place and essential services remain operational.
The instructions were issued at a review meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Pingua at Mantralaya Mahanadi Bhawan. Collectors and senior officials from several departments joined the meeting through video conferencing. The review focused on protecting residents in vulnerable areas, ensuring timely medical assistance and preparing for damage to infrastructure if the weather deteriorates.
Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada, Bastar and Narayanpur have been identified for special attention because of the possibility of strong winds and adverse weather conditions.
Pingua directed officials to keep relief camps operational around the clock and ensure that basic facilities were available. The Health Department was asked to maintain uninterrupted medical services and identify pregnant women who might need to be moved to safer locations.
The Agriculture Department has been instructed to issue advisories to farmers and take steps to limit possible losses to crops and livestock. Officials have also been told to assess local risks and make suitable safety arrangements for schoolchildren and children attending anganwadi centres.
Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been asked to remain ready at designated locations.
Revenue and Disaster Management Secretary Shammi Abidi directed officials to assess the vulnerability of kutcha houses to strong winds and arrange for people in high-risk areas to be shifted to safer places when necessary. The Electricity department has been asked to prepare for possible damage to power poles and other infrastructure. Authorities are also working on alternative arrangements to limit disruptions to telecommunications services.
Officials have been instructed to clear fallen trees promptly to prevent road blockages. Hoardings and other structures that could become dangerous in strong winds must also be inspected, with safety measures taken where required.
Health and Family Welfare Secretary Amit Kataria and senior officials from the NDRF, SDRF, Revenue and Disaster Management Department and Home Department attended the meeting. The government has directed departments to coordinate their preparations and remain ready to respond if the cyclone affects the state.
