UP government to expand market for weavers through government procurement

Lucknow, Sep 15 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government is aggresively taking steps to strengthen the handloom sector by creating a sustainable and assured market for products made by the state's weavers through government procurement.
In this regard, an important review meeting was held here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Khadi and Village Industries, Silk, Handloom and Textiles Minister Rakesh Sachan to discuss procurement and supply arrangements for handloom products required by the Health Department.
In line with the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the meeting discussed in detail an action plan for the procurement and supply of handloom-made bedsheets and gauze bandages to government hospitals, medical colleges and other medical institutions.
Minister Rakesh Sachan directed officials to implement the system at the earliest, ensuring that government institutions receive quality handloom products while simultaneously creating a large and sustainable market for the state's weavers.
It may be recalled that during the National Handloom Day programme held at Lok Bhavan, Lucknow, on August 7, 2026, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed officials to ensure the procurement of key textile products, particularly bedsheets and gauze bandages, used by the Health Department and other government departments and public sector undertakings.
Following the Chief Minister's directives, a meeting was held on September 1 under the chairmanship of Minister Rakesh Sachan to chalk out an action plan. During Tuesday's meeting, various aspects of the proposed supply mechanism were reviewed in detail with officials of the Health Department.
Under the proposed arrangement, bedsheets, pillow covers and gauze bandage cloth required by government hospitals, medical colleges and other medical institutions would be supplied through the Uttar Pradesh State Handloom Corporation Limited.
The products would be sourced from weavers and weaver cooperatives in the state, ensuring that government procurement directly supports local handloom production and provides a wider market for their products.
Minister Rakesh Sachan said the state government's objective was not merely to increase government procurement of handloom products, but to provide sustainable employment, a stable market and greater economic security to weaver families.
He said increased procurement of products manufactured by local weavers by government institutions would give fresh impetus to the weaving sector and encourage the younger generation to remain connected with the state's traditional weaving profession.
The minister emphasised that products supplied to government institutions must meet prescribed quality standards. He directed officials to establish clear and efficient procedures covering product specifications, quality testing, pricing, receipt of requisitions, issuance of purchase orders, payments and timely delivery.
The meeting also discussed obtaining demand from medical institutions based on their actual requirements and prescribed specifications and developing a time-bound procurement and supply mechanism accordingly.
To ensure effective implementation, the appointment of nodal officers at the appropriate level has also been proposed. These officers will coordinate with hospitals and medical colleges to assess their requirements and monitor the timely supply of products according to demand.
Minister Rakesh Sachan directed officials to accord priority to the entire action plan in accordance with the Chief Minister's directives. He also instructed officials of the concerned departments to work in close coordination, issue necessary guidelines promptly and ensure effective implementation of the supply system on the ground.
Principal Secretary, Handloom and Textiles, Anil Sagar; Special Secretary Sheshmani Pandey; Joint Commissioner P.C. Thakur; and senior officials from the Medical, Health and Family Welfare Department and other concerned departments were present at the meeting.
