ABVP backs NLSIU screening cancellation

Bengaluru, Sept 19 (UNI) The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Saturday backed the cancellation of a proposed screening of a documentary on Umar Khalid at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), asserting that academic freedom cannot be used to promote what it termed “subversive agendas” against national sovereignty and security.
Reacting to the cancellation, ABVP Bengaluru Secretary Abhinandan Mirji said universities must remain spaces for free speech, open debate and academic freedom, but these freedoms cannot, in the organisation's view, extend to narratives that compromise national security or unity.
“Academic freedom cannot be used to shield subversive agendas targeting national sovereignty,” Mirji said, arguing that premier legal institutions should not become platforms for individuals associated with glorifying attacks on the country or advocating the secession and fragmentation of Jammu and Kashmir.
The ABVP said educational institutions should remain centres of academic excellence and national pride, and warned that attempts to undermine national unity under the guise of open discourse would face opposition from the student community.
The proposed screening had triggered controversy on the NLSIU campus, with the ABVP opposing the programme and raising concerns over the documentary's subject.
The student organisers had cited logistical and security considerations in announcing the postponement of the screening, while the controversy has since widened into a debate over the limits of free speech and academic discourse on university campuses.
The ABVP said it supported vibrant campus discussions and freedom of expression, but maintained that national security and the country's sovereignty must take precedence where they are perceived to be at stake.
