Three young lives lost as speeding luxury car rams scooter near Kochi airport

Kochi, Oct 11 (UNI) Three young people, including two women, were killed when a speeding luxury car rammed into their scooter on the VIP Road at Athani near Nedumbassery, with police launching an investigation into suspected drunk driving and alleged reckless behaviour by the 18-year-old driver.
The deceased were identified as Devika (21), a native of Wayanad, Gopika (22), from Palakkad, and Ijaz (21), from South Karnataka. They were working part-time at an antique shop in Thrikkakara while pursuing aviation studies, according to the information available.
The trio were returning after having tea with friends following their work when the accident occurred. Friends travelling behind them on two other motorcycles witnessed the aftermath of the collision, which left the three young people dead.
The car was driven by Suhail Sajeev, 18, son of the owners of Eh Designs, a prominent clothing retail business operating in Alappuzha and Kochi. He was reportedly heading towards Athani to pick up a friend arriving at Cochin International Airport when the accident occurred.
Police registered a case against Suhail under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He was taken into custody following the incident.
Police are investigating whether alcohol or other intoxicating substances contributed to the crash. According to reports, a medical examination indicated that the driver had consumed alcohol. Investigators are also examining information about his movements before the accident, including claims that he visited several bars and five-star hotels in Kochi on Saturday.
Eyewitness accounts carried by the media said the driver allegedly behaved aggressively towards people who gathered at the accident site and claimed that his father would take care of the consequences. The remarks have triggered public anger and renewed debate over reckless driving and accountability, irrespective of a person's financial or social background.
Investigators are also examining social media videos allegedly showing Suhail driving luxury cars at speeds of around 220 kmph. The footage is being scrutinised as part of the inquiry into his driving behaviour and the circumstances leading to the fatal collision.
Suhail is a B.Com student at Rajagiri College and resides with his family at Gold Tower Apartments in Kakkanad. His parents, Sajeev Jamal and Nuha Sajeev, are associated with Eh Designs, which operates in Alappuzha and Kochi and has a substantial social media following.
The Motor Vehicles Department is also examining the case, including the possibility of proceedings against the driver's licence. Police are continuing to collect evidence to establish the exact sequence of events, the speed of the car and the role of alleged intoxication in the crash.
The bodies of the victims were taken for post-mortem examination before being handed over to their relatives.
The tragedy has once again brought road safety in the airport region into focus, with concerns over high-speed driving and the risks posed to other road users. The investigation is expected to establish the precise circumstances of the collision and the legal responsibility of the accused.
