Calicut FC footballer Rijon Jose killed in road accident

Kozhikode, Sep 21 (UNI) Calicut FC defender Rijon Jose, 29, was killed in a road accident near the Malabar Christian College here late Sunday night, while his teammate and Kerala Santosh Trophy player Gani Ahmed Nigam suffered serious injuries.
The accident occurred around 10 pm near the flyover close to Malabar Christian College when the Kawasaki motorcycle carrying Rijon and Gani collided with another motorcycle. The impact threw the riders onto the road.
Rijon and Gani were rushed to hospital immediately. Rijon, a native of Thrissur, succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday despite treatment. Gani, who suffered serious injuries, was initially taken to a private hospital and later shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.
The accident came just days before the new season of the Super League Kerala, in which Rijon was set to represent Calicut FC. The team had been undergoing intensive preparations for its opening fixture against Thiruvananthapuram Kombans, scheduled to be played at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Saturday.
The Calicut FC squad had been training at the JDT Ground, Vellimadukunnu, ahead of the opening match.
Rijon had earlier played for Forca Kochi, FC Deccan, Wayanad United and George Telegraph before joining Calicut FC. He was regarded as a promising player in Indian domestic football.
Gani Ahmed Nigam, who was travelling with Rijon at the time of the accident, represented Kerala in the previous Santosh Trophy tournament.
The tragic death has come as a shock to the Kerala football community, with Rijon's death occurring on the eve of the Super League Kerala season.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the accident.
