Suspected terror angle in Kochi Jewish synagogue fire raises Israel-linked security concerns: Youth arrested

Kochi, Oct 14 (UNI) A suspected terror angle in a fire incident at an ancient Jewish synagogue on Market Road here has raised concerns over the security of Jewish heritage sites in Kerala, with the arrest of a youth allegedly linked to Pakistan-based terrorist groups drawing attention to the historical connections between Kochi's Jewish community and Israel.
The arrested youth, identified as Abin Paul, is suspected of having links with Pakistan-based groups, though the alleged connections are yet to be independently established. Investigators are examining the motive behind the incident and whether the fire was a targeted attack or part of a wider conspiracy. No confirmed evidence has so far established a link between the incident and Israel.
In a post on X, South East Asian political commentator and analyst A Harikumar expressed serious concern over the incident, noting that it occurred despite police protection at the synagogue. He said intelligence agencies had warned of a possible threat to the religious site and questioned the preparedness of the security system.
