Six killed, four missing, including tourists, as heavy rain triggers landslides, flash floods in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 21 (UNI) Six people were killed and four others went missing in rain-related incidents, including landslides and flash floods, in Kerala as heavy rains lashed several parts of the state, particularly the hilly regions of Idukki, Kottayam and Malappuram districts.
Two people were killed in a landslide at Vattavada in Idukki district, while two others died after a flash flood hit Kottappuzha near TK Colony in Malappuram. Two more people died in separate rain-related incidents in Kottayam district last night.
The flash flood at Kottappuzha also left four people missing, including three tourists and a local woman, as rescue teams intensified efforts to trace them. The incident occurred after heavy rain in the interior forest areas triggered a sudden rise in water levels.
In Idukki, Balakrishnan Perumal (51) and his neighbour C Chinnammal (38), residents of Kottakambur village near Amman Kovil, were killed in the landslide on Sunday afternoon. Balakrishnan's wife Mariyammal (45), who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at Tata Tea Hospital, Munnar.
In Malappuram, one of the deceased was identified as Mangadan Anas (27), a native of Tirur and an employee of a private bus. The other victim, believed to be around 60 years old, was found dead nearly five km from the spot, below the Pottikkallu check dam.
Sajitha (26), who was reportedly swept away while washing clothes, is among those missing. A large number of tourists were present in the river area when the flash flood occurred.
In Kottayam, an 80-year-old man, Joseph of Chelakattu at Uravaplavu, was killed when a landslide hit his house at Peringulam in Poonjar Thekkekara panchayat. His sons Jimmy and Dennis sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.
In another incident, Sangeetha Arullal (35), a native of Jawahar Nagar in Chennai, died after a retaining wall collapsed on the Erattupetta-Vagamon road while she was returning on a scooter with a friend after visiting Vagamon. Her companion escaped unhurt.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast moderate rain and strong winds of up to 40 kmph in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kozhikode districts in the coming hours.
Following the intensified rainfall, the Chief Minister directed authorities to assess the situation on an hourly basis. An emergency meeting chaired by the Disaster Management Commissioner with the Idukki and Kottayam district collectors reviewed the situation and evacuation measures.
Alerts and instructions have also been issued through SMS in vulnerable areas. A special disaster-response team has been deployed to the TK Colony area at Amarambalam in Malappuram following reports of missing persons.
