Centre okays Rs 98 crore trauma hub near KIA

Bengaluru, June 28 (UNI) The Union Finance Ministry has given in-principle approval for the construction of a 300-bed polytrauma centre under NIMHANS near Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at a cost of Rs 498 crore, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya announced today.
Welcoming the decision, Surya said the facility would be a significant step in providing critical emergency care to accident victims in and around Bengaluru, especially in areas lacking trauma care infrastructure.
"This polytrauma centre will save countless lives by delivering emergency treatment during the crucial golden hour. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for this much-needed approval," Surya said.
The expenditure department of the Ministry of Finance granted its clearance yesterday for the project, which will be located at Kyalasanahalli near the airport. The proposal was submitted by NIMHANS to build a state-of-the-art trauma care facility on 39 acres of land allocated during the BJP-led Karnataka government in 2012-13.
Surya, who had earlier met Union Health Minister JP Nadda and pursued the proposal since 2022, said this approval, timed with Kempegowda Jayanti celebrations, holds special significance for Bengaluru.
He also recalled meetings with former Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and ongoing support from Bengaluru Rural MP Dr CN Manjunath in pushing for the centre’s early approval.
Citing WHO data, the MP noted that road traffic accidents could become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. In India, 4.61 lakh road accidents were reported in 2022, resulting in over 1.68 lakh deaths and injuries to more than 4.43 lakh people.
"There is currently no public trauma care facility near the airport. Once operational, this polytrauma centre will serve as a crucial referral hub for accident victims, assault cases, multi-organ failure patients, and those suffering serious injuries," he said.
The final clearance from the Union Health Ministry is expected soon, officials said.
