Shah-Chitale stun world No. 4 pair, secure Asian Games mixed doubles bronze

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) Manush Shah and Diya Chitale ended India’s wait for another Asian Games mixed doubles table tennis medal, securing bronze after a spirited campaign that saw them knock out the world No. 4 pair from Hong Kong before running into the formidable Chinese combination in the semifinals here on Friday.
The Indian eighth-seeded pair went down 8-11, 5-11, 8-11, 2-11 to China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha in the last four. Their semifinal appearance, however, guaranteed them bronze as the Asian Games mixed doubles competition does not have a bronze-medal playoff.
The medal is only the second Asian Games mixed doubles table tennis medal for India, coming eight years after Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra won bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Games.
