Telangana CM Revanth Calls for Nationwide ‘SIR Go Back’ Movement, Raises Concerns Over Voter Deletions

New Delhi/ Hyderabad, Sept 28 (UNI): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday called for a nationwide movement against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, drawing a parallel with the freedom struggle slogan “Simon Go Back” and alleging that the exercise was being used to delete voters opposed to the BJP-led government.
Speaking at the ‘India’s Next Chapter’ session at the Pratidin Conclave in New Delhi, Reddy accused the Election Commission of centralising its authority and alleged that the voter revision exercise could undermine democratic rights.
He called on opposition leaders, including former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray and DMK Chief M.K. Stalin, to unite on the issue.
The Chief Minister alleged that large numbers of voters were being removed from electoral rolls and questioned the rationale for such deletions as the country’s population continued to grow.
He also criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that decisions were being taken without adequate consultation with the other Election Commissioners.
These allegations were made by the Chief Minister during the discussion.
Reddy also expressed concern that the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies could reduce the relative representation of southern States, which had implemented family-planning measures earlier than several northern States.
He suggested extending the freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats for another 25 years, arguing that this would prevent disparities in parliamentary representation from widening.
He cited the difference between Kerala’s 20 Lok Sabha seats and Uttar Pradesh’s 80 and said an increase in seats based on population could further widen the gap.
He also argued that southern States had limited representation in key union portfolios and called for a fairer distribution of political representation.
The Telangana Chief Minister accused the union government of providing inadequate support to the State’s infrastructure projects, citing the proposed Regional Ring Road, Metro Rail expansion and national highway development.
He said he was ready to debate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the development of States.
Reddy argued that the Centre should support the development needs of all States and alleged that Telangana had not received the cooperation extended to Gujarat during Modi’s tenure as its Chief Minister.
Speaking about Telangana’s development priorities, Reddy said his government was focusing on improving public education, healthcare and skill development. He cited the State’s teacher-student ratio and said the government was working to address the reasons students continued to leave government schools.
He highlighted the establishment of Young India Skills University, with industrial leaders involved in its governance, to improve job readiness among students.
The State was also setting up Advanced Training Centres in constituencies and updating Industrial Training Institute courses in collaboration with Tatas, he said.
Reddy said students needed practical skills and communication abilities alongside academic qualifications to improve their employment prospects, including opportunities in countries such as Germany, Japan and South Korea.
