KPSC recruitment row: Karnataka HC takes probe from CID, orders fresh SIT investigation

Bengaluru, Sept 21 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court on Monday wrested the probe into alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment from the CID and ordered a fresh investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), while rejecting the demand for a CBI probe.
Justice M Nagaprasanna directed the State to constitute the SIT headed by senior IPS officer Alok Kumar, DGP, Prisons and Correctional Services, to conduct a de novo investigation into the alleged KPSC Veterinary Officer recruitment irregularities.
The court's order effectively replaces the ongoing investigation by the CID and jurisdictional police with a fresh probe by a specially constituted team.
The SIT comprises Divya V Gopinath, Anoop A Shetty, Kushal Chouksey and Kshama Mishra, besides Alok Kumar as its head.
The court directed the CID and other police units investigating the cases to hand over all records, documents, electronic evidence and other material collected so far to the SIT within one week.
After the transfer of the material, the CID and jurisdictional police shall cease further investigation, except when their assistance is sought by the SIT.
Rejecting the plea for a CBI investigation, the court held that a fresh probe by an SIT was an appropriate course in the circumstances.
The SIT has been directed not to confine its investigation to those already named in the cases. If evidence surfaces against other persons, offences or transactions connected with the alleged recruitment irregularities, the team has been directed to investigate them in accordance with law.
The High Court has set a tight timeline for the investigation, directing the SIT to submit its final report within 100 days of commencing the probe. It will also have to submit a progress report to the court every 30 days.
The State Government has been directed to issue a notification formally constituting the SIT as a police station for the purpose of investigating the cases.
The court further directed the SIT to cooperate with the Enforcement Directorate, which is conducting a parallel investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and to receive information gathered by the central agency.
The petitions before the High Court included those filed by BJP MLA Basanagouda R Patil Yatnal and the All Karnataka State Students Association, seeking a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in KPSC recruitment.
The allegations centre on the recruitment of Veterinary Officers and have also raised broader questions over the integrity of KPSC recruitment processes.
The matter has been posted for further consideration on January 5, 2027.
