Two days after raids by CCB police, ex-DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh appear before cops for questioning in corruption case

Chennai, Sep 18 (UNI) Two days after registering cases under various sections and also under PCA and conducting raids at premises linked to him and his personal assistants, senior DMK leader and Former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi appeared before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) Wing of the Greater Chennai City police on Friday in the case pertained to allegedly collection of funds to the tune of Rs 100 crore from private schools promising permament recognition, government approvals for building approvals and other clearances during the previous DMK regime.
Mahesh arrived at the CCB office at the Chennai Police Commissionerate in Vepery at around 10.30 am in response to a summons issued by the investigating agency. DMK advocate Saravanan Anadurai and party functionary Babu accompanied him.
Later, talking to reporters, he said he had responded to the questions put to him by the authorities and said the case was foisted due to political vendetta and that he would prove his innocence in the court of law and uphold justice.
The CCB police had on Wednesday registered corruption cases and conducted raids at nine locations linked to the ex-DMK Minister and three of his personal assistants for alleged irregularties in according/renewing recognitions to private schools to the tune of Rs 100-crore and seized 188 incriminating documents during the previous regime.
After registering cases under various sections including under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, the CCB officials conducted raids at the premises of the ex-Minister and his assistants Valadi Karthik, Arun Prakash and Prakash.
The raids were conducted at nine locations linked to the four people, including two premises each linked to the DMK leader in his native Tiruchy and Chennai, and seized 118 documents, including property documents, bank account details, cheques, 18 mobile phones, three laptops, eight pendrives, a desktop with inbuilt hard disk, one Tablet and one Apple I-pad.
After arresting three persons, the CCB as part of widening the probe has conducted the search operations today to unearth more details in the alleged scam.
The CCB said already three persons were arrested based on a complaint from Federation of Associations of Private School in Tamil Nadu Secretary Elangovan that B.T.Arasakumar (59) had collected large sums of money from private school managements promising to secure government approvals and clearances, including Permanent Recognition, School Upgradation and building-related approvals.
Arasakumar was arrested on June 27 and was remanded in judicial custody. He was subsequently detained under the Goondas Act. Widening the probe, police arrested two more people--Suresh and Raja in the case.
After holding state-wide inquiries, questioning about 250 people, including officials attached to the School Education and other Deparments and seizing incriminating documents, it came to light to light that several crores of money have been collected from 177 private schools in the first phase. As the complaints continued to pour in alleging financial irregularties and cheating, officials freezed
the bank accounts of Arasakumar, his family members and those linked to him.
Several documents and digital evidences, including mobile phones, hard disks were recovered. Even as further probe was on in the case, a persual of the seized materials and evidences revealed the involvement of the former School Education Minister in corrupt activities. After registering cases under PCA and other provisions, simultaneous raids were conducted following which summons were issued to him and he appeared today before the investigating officers for questigoning
