ICG organises Coastal Clean up mission in 17 beaches in TN, Pondy, AP

Chennai, Sep 19 (UNI) The Chennai-based Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Regional Headquarters (East) successfully conducted the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC 2026) day on Saturday in which Tamil Nadu Governor R.V.Arlekar and Puducherry Lt.Governor K.Kailashanathan actively took part.
This year, the clean up mission was held under the theme “Clean Ocean, Safe Coast, Our Identity” and the ecological campaign spanned 17 beaches across the coastal stretches of Tamil Nadu,
Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.
The coastal clean up mission culminated in the successful recovery of over 8,200 kg of marine litter, that were disposed in a safe and responsible manner. The mission reinforces the ICG's unwavering
commitment to protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems, combating ocean pollution, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of India's coastline.
The initiative witnessed participation of approximately 7,700 volunteers from the State government departments, the Indian Army, CISF, NSS, NCC cadets, educational institutions, and various NGOs, thereby integrating and encouraging participants spanning a wide cross section of society. This extensive participation highlighted a growing public interest towards maritime environment conservation.
Volunteers equipped with protective gear spruced up the beaches, meticulously segregating plastic waste, abandoned fishing nets, glass bottles, and other non-biodegradable pollutants which are harmful
for coastal biodiversity and marine life.
The scale and significance of the ICC2026 day were further elevated by the active participation of top state leadership.
The Tamil Nadu Governor and the Puducherry Lt.Governor graced the events held at Marina Beach, Chennai, and Rock Beach, Puducherry, respectively.
This year's ICC-2026 was synchronised with the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)’s 5th edition of the ";Clean Coast, Safe Sea” initiative. This institutional synergy ensured that data regarding the types and volumes of waste collected was scientifically logged to aid long-term oceanographic research and policy formulation aimed at mitigating plastic leakage into the Indian Ocean.
