Thiruvananthapuram Mayor keen to replicate Chandigarh's waste management initiatives

Thiruvananthapuram/Chandigarh, Oct 6 (UNI) Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh has shown interest in replicating innovative waste management initiatives of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, particularly the conversion of construction and demolition waste into building materials and the recycling of temple flowers into chemical-free incense sticks.
Rajesh, who is attending the two-day executive meeting of the All India Mayors Conference in Chandigarh, said these initiatives could provide useful models for other urban local bodies. He said a team from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation would be sent to Chandigarh to study the projects in detail and assess their feasibility for implementation in the Kerala capital.
The Chandigarh Corporation collects construction debris generated during the demolition of buildings and subjects it to a systematic processing procedure to manufacture interlocking blocks, hollow bricks and other products. These products are subsequently sold, turning what is otherwise a major waste-management challenge into a source of reusable materials.
Rajesh also took note of the initiative to collect flowers discarded after use in temples and convert them into incense sticks without adding other chemicals. Local women are engaged in manufacturing the incense sticks, which are sold on a wholesale basis.
He said the initiative would help put used temple flowers to productive use while reducing the dependence on incense sticks containing chemical additives.
When Rajesh expressed his interest in studying the initiatives, Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi accompanied him and explained the various activities being undertaken by the corporation. Joshi also invited a team from Thiruvananthapuram to visit Chandigarh and study the projects.
"We will study all these initiatives in detail and, if possible, try to implement similar projects in Thiruvananthapuram," Rajesh said.
The Mayor said the All India Mayors Conference had brought together mayors and senior officials representing municipal corporations from different parts of the country. The two-day deliberations would provide valuable inputs for the future activities of the participating corporations, he said.
Rajesh also said Thiruvananthapuram received an enthusiastic response when the city was introduced at the conference. The venue and the audience greeted the mention of the city with applause.
He said the response could also be linked to the recent visits of the Prime Minister and the union Home Minister to the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
As part of the conference activities, Rajesh and other mayors also visited the Rose Garden owned and maintained by the Chandigarh Corporation. According to Mayor Saurabh Joshi, around 820 varieties of roses are being maintained at the garden.
Arrangements had been made for rose plants to be planted in the names of all the mayors who participated in the day's meeting.
Rajesh said the Chandigarh Corporation was making efforts to turn the All India Mayors Conference into a significant and memorable event in the city's history.
