Telangana Dy CM Bhatti demands CEC’s resignation over voter rights concerns

New Delhi/Hyderabad, Oct 8 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Thursday expressed concern over what he described as attempts to undermine citizens’ constitutional right to vote and criticised the Central government and Election Commission over the issue.
Talking to the media in New Delhi, Bhatti said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was raising the issue not merely in the interest of his party but to safeguard the voting rights of citizens across the country. He said the right to vote was fundamental to democracy and that any attempt to deprive citizens of it was a serious matter.
Bhatti said the Election Commission had a responsibility to ensure public confidence in the electoral process and conduct elections in a free and fair manner. He said concerns over the functioning of the system should be addressed transparently.
He demanded that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign and apologise to the people over the developments surrounding the voter-list revision process. Bhatti also criticised the Election Commission for issuing statements against the opposition and Rahul Gandhi instead of addressing the concerns raised over alleged irregularities.
He asserted that the issues raised by Rahul Gandhi could not be concealed for long and called for transparency in the electoral process.
