Over 7,000 visit CCMB Hyderabad on Open Day to explore science

Hyderabad, Sep 26 (UNI) More than 7,000 people visited the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here on Saturday as part of its annual Open Day, which provided students and the public an opportunity to explore scientific research and interact with scientists.
The event focused on the themes of ‘Life Around Us’ and ‘Health’, with research groups setting up interactive exhibits and discussion areas to explain their work in biology and healthcare to visitors, the Centre said in a release.
School and college students formed the majority of the visitors.
For nearly half of the schools attending this year, the visit marked their first exposure to CCMB or any research institute, highlighting the need for greater science outreach, the centre said.
CCMB Director Dr. Vinay K. Nandicoori said the event enabled scientists and Ph.D. students to explain their research to people outside the scientific community and understand their questions and perspectives.
“Talking about our work as scientists with young people and hearing their responses sometimes validates us and sometimes gives us a reality check on the gap between our work and people’s lived experiences,” he said, adding that such interactions inspired researchers to focus on questions that affect people's lives.
Students from Guru Nanak High School in Hyderabad were among those who explored topics ranging from liquid nitrogen and cancer to eye and brain research and spiders.
Nandicoori said that despite CCMB’s study-tour programmes for schools and colleges, many students had not previously visited a research institute, underscoring the scope for expanding science outreach in the country.
DOBARA Senior Wellbeing, a Hyderabad-based organisation, brought 700 students to the event as part of its school support programme.
Its founders, Ayesha and Imran Taiyebi, said the students experienced scientific discovery through interactive exhibits, quizzes, games and discussions on career opportunities in science and research.
They described the event as an engaging blend of education and entertainment.
