Chinta Mohan announces Centenary Celebrations of Dalit temple entry at Tirupati

Hyderabad, Sep 21 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former union Minister Chinta Mohan on Monday announced centenary celebrations in Tirupati to commemorate what he described as the historic entry of a Dalit into the Tiruchanur temple in 1925.
Addressing the media at the Press Club in Somajiguda here, Chinta Mohan said a Dalit man entered the Tiruchanur temple near Tirupati and performed Karpura Harathi on October 13, 1925. He was subsequently arrested under Section 295 and detained in the Tirupati sub-jail, he said.
According to Chinta Mohan, Congress leader Chakravarti Rajagopalachari appeared before the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate and argued for the man's release.
He said Mahatma Gandhi later visited Tirupati and conducted a Satyagraha, following which 33 Dalits were permitted to enter the Tiruchanur temple.
He said centenary celebrations marking the historic temple-entry event would be held in Tirupati on October 11, 12 and 13.
Prominent national leaders, senior judges and other distinguished personalities would be invited to the programme, he said.
