Vijay writes to EAM to secure release of TN fishermen, boats from Lankan custody

Chennai, Oct 5 (UNI) In the backdrop of arrest of nine fishermen from Rameswaram on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday evening wrote to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr.S.Jaishankar urging him to secure the release of all 20 fishermen arrested and lodged in Sri Lankan prisonS along with their 270 boats.
In a Demi-Official letter to the EAM, he referred to the latest incident of the nine fishermen arrest and such continuing arrests has caused deep anguish and fear among the coastal fishermen community who depended on the sea for their livelihood.
Stating that fishermen from Ramanathapuram and surrounding coastal districls have been traditionally fishing in the Palk Bay, he said the boats were the primary source of their livelihood, the recurring arrests and impounding of their boats have caused deep anguish among the fishing community.
In the light of recurring incidents, it was imperative and urgent need to strengthen the officiall level committee and revamp the India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group, convene its meeting at the earliest and secure the early release of 20 fishermen and their 270 boats.
