Kerala unveils Quality of Care Strategy to improve public healthcare

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (UNI) Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan on Thursday released the Kerala Quality of Care Strategy, aimed at improving the quality of treatment and patient care in public health institutions across the state.
The strategy seeks to complement investments in healthcare infrastructure with improved treatment outcomes and better patient care, ensuring high-quality health services for all, irrespective of socio-economic differences.
Speaking at the launch held at the Secretariat, the minister said healthcare quality should go beyond mere compliance with statutory standards and stressed the need to make health services more efficient through evidence-based decisions and continuous improvement.
Implemented by Arogyakeralam with technical assistance from the World Bank, the strategy focuses on expanding National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) accreditation, improving the management of lifestyle diseases, strengthening digital monitoring and ensuring quality in One Health initiatives.
The strategy is expected to strengthen Pratheeksha centres, which provide round-the-clock specialist care at district and general hospitals. The initiative aims to reduce the burden on medical colleges while making specialist treatment more accessible to people closer to their homes.
It will also reinforce the Kayakalp programme, which focuses on improving hospital cleanliness, hygiene and infection control, and the Hridayaragam initiative, aimed at preventing and managing lifestyle diseases.
The strategy seeks to ensure that improvements in healthcare infrastructure translate into better treatment outcomes and more accessible, patient-centred services.
Health Department Principal Secretary Dr Sharmila Mary Joseph, Arogyakeralam Director Dr Renu Raj, World Bank South Asia Regional Health Practice Manager Dr Christophe Lemiere, Lead Economist Dr Ajay Tandon and Senior Health Specialist Sheena Chhabra, among others, attended the function.
