Female protestors detained during anti-SIR protest

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (UNI) Two female protesters were taken into preventive custody near KR Circle in Bengaluru during an anti-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) protest and subsequently released, the Bengaluru City Police said.
The police said a group of protesters had assembled near KR Circle without prior intimation or permission, in violation of the Karnataka High Court's directions that protests be held at designated locations.
The protesters were initially asked to move to Freedom Park, the designated venue for demonstrations, but did not comply, following which they were taken into preventive custody in accordance with law, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Division, said in a post on X.
The incident came to public attention after Arpita Das alleged that her daughter and her daughter's friend had been detained while participating in the protest.
Tagging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, she questioned why young people participating in a protest were being detained in Karnataka, a Congress-ruled state.
“Why is this happening in a Congress-ruled state even when the young step out in support of your cause?” she asked, seeking a response from the party leadership.
The police said they had acted with restraint and sensitivity under the prevailing circumstances.
Urging citizens to comply with the High Court's directions, the police said peaceful protests should be held only at Freedom Park, while respecting public convenience and maintaining law and order.
