Narayanaswamy lodges complaint with Horatti

Kalaburagi, May 24 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, has reportedly lodged a complaint with Council Chairperson Basavaraj Horatti, alleging that he was illegally detained and assaulted by individuals claiming to be Congress workers during a visit to Chittapur in Kalaburagi district.
He also contacted the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly by telephone, as the latter was not in office at the time.
In a serious allegation here on Saturday, Narayanaswamy said the police remained inactive under the influence of Minister Priyank Kharge, who was allegedly issuing instructions to officers over the phone.
In his complaint, the BJP leader stated that he was confined for over six hours and verbally abused at the government guesthouse in Chittapur while attending the Tiranga Yatra programme. Despite repeated requests for protection, he alleged, senior police officials on the spot failed to intervene.
"Kalaburagi SP Adoor Srinivasulu, Additional SP Mahesh Meghannanavar, DySP Shankar Gowda Patil, and Circle Inspectors Chandrashekhar Tigadi and Nataraj Lada remained silent even as the situation escalated," he said.
Narrating the sequence of events, Narayanaswamy said a group of individuals gathered outside the guesthouse around 3.30 pm, raised slogans and created a disturbance. Later, around 7.38 pm, the mob allegedly stormed the premises, damaged his official vehicle, attempted to assault him, and issued life threats.
He claimed that police officers present at the scene refused to act, saying they were awaiting directions from Minister Priyank Kharge.
"Despite a strong police presence, they did nothing to disperse a group of barely 20 people who were causing chaos. Why? Because they kept saying they were helpless. Who was behind this? Priyank Kharge ji, who was reportedly calling and directing the police," Mr Narayanaswamy alleged.
He added, "I told the officers, ‘If you cannot provide me security, I will walk out. Otherwise, I’ll stay the whole night.’ Hearing this, they became anxious and finally let me leave the guesthouse."
Narayanaswamy also questioned whether such an incident would be tolerated if it had happened to Congress veteran and Rajya Sabha leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. "Is this the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar? These people claim to follow him and call themselves tigers. Am I a timid cat? We will not be cowed down. We will teach them a lesson through our protest," he said.
Describing the episode as politically motivated, the BJP leader asserted that the inaction of the police and the conduct of the alleged Congress-backed mob was a deliberate attempt to intimidate him.
In response to the incident, the BJP has announced a protest rally in front of the Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner’s office. "Congress workers have insulted our senior leader. The party will hold a rally to demand justice," BJP Kalaburagi unit chief executive Ravikumar said.
