Kerala PSC exam scam: Former deputy secretary arrested; chairman questioned

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 28 (UNI) The Kerala Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested former Public Service Commission (PSC) Deputy Secretary P Satheesh in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment examination for the post of Chief of the State Planning Board, while PSC Chairman M R Baiju appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for questioning.
The arrest marks a major development in the probe into suspected manipulation of the examination evaluation process, which allegedly resulted in a candidate securing the top rank despite serious discrepancies in the assessment of answer scripts.
Investigators found that 10 questions carrying a total of 58 marks had been left unevaluated. The alleged irregularities have raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the recruitment process.
Satheesh, who was responsible for the examination section, was arrested from his residence in Kozhikode. The SIT had earlier named him and PSC Examination Wing Additional Secretary R Hari as accused in the case. Hari has been suspended, while Satheesh's retirement benefits have been withheld.
Baiju's appearance before the investigation team, led by Crime Branch IG Ajeetha Begum, comes amid increased scrutiny of the commission's functioning and questions over the pace of the investigation.
The Kerala High Court had criticised the delay in the probe, prompting the investigating agency to intensify its examination of the alleged irregularities and the possible involvement of senior officials.
The investigation has also widened to cover alleged anomalies in recruitment examinations for the posts of Fisheries Extension Officer and Village Oil Inspector, for which separate cases have been registered.
The SIT is examining the roles of officials and other persons who may have been involved in the alleged manipulation. Further action is expected as the investigation progresses.
