Pained Vijay pay tearful tributes to Karur stampede victims, prayers, lighting of candles mark 1st anniv

Chennai, Sep 27 (UNI) Lighting of candles and special prayers marked the first anniversary of the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives
and left several hurt this day last year, even as a pained TVK Founder and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Sunday paid his heartfelt tributes terming the tragedy as an unhealed wound that would remain in his lifetime.
Poignant and emotional scenes were witnessed with kins of the victims mourning the loss of their dear ones at Velusamypuram in Karur where the deadly stampede during Vijay's public outreach turned tragic when people vied with each other and rushed towards Vijay to have a glimpse of him.
A large number of TVK cadres, including Ministers, senior leaders, Minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar, party functionaries wearing black shirts, besides women wearing black sarees, paid homage to the victims. Apart from the the teary-eyed family members of the victims, tens and hundreds of public too paid their homage by lighting candles and offering prayers at a specially erected dais where the portraits of the victims were kept.
Meanwhile, Vijay in his tributes to mark the first anniversary of the September 27, 2025 tragedy, said the day remained as one of the most painful in his life and in the lives of the people of Karur.
"Last year, on this very day, September 27, 2025, a painful tragedy occurred that remains an unhealed wound and enduring pain in my lifetime, in the lives of our Karur brethren and in the hearts of our Tamil Nadu family,” he said in a social media post.
He said the tragedy had left him, the people of Karur and TVK cadres carrying an indescribable sense of grief over the loss of their loved ones.
Calling for solidarity with the bereaved, he said those mourning their loved ones should support and comfort one another and remain a source of strength in their hour of grief. “We will be our own source of solace, support and strength,” Vijay added,
Paying tribute to those who died, he said their memories would remain alive in the hearts of their loved ones. “My heartfelt homage to all those who live on in our memories,” he said.
