PM Modi inaugurates, dedicates Rs 750 cr worth railway projects in TN

Chennai, Oct 11 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and dedicated railway projects worth Rs.750 crores, which will give a significant boost to rail connectivity, passenger convenience and operational efficiency in Tamil Nadu.
At a public event held at Kendriya Vidyalaya ground in IIT-Madras campus, the Prime Minister, in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay, who shared dais with him for the first time after becoming CM, inaugurated five railway stations -- Ambasamudram, Palani and Paramakudi in Madurai Division, Namakkal in Salem Division and Vellore Cantonment in Tiruchchirappalli Division -- redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a cumulative investment of over Rs.70 crore.
The redeveloped stations will offer improved passenger amenities, enhanced accessibility, upgraded waiting areas and other modern facilities, providing passengers with a more comfortable and convenient travel experience. The redevelopment will also strengthen the role of these stations as important centres of regional connectivity and economic activity.
Mr Modi also dedicated to the nation the 23 km Karaikal–Peralam Rail Line, developed at a cost of over Rs.550 crore, strengthening the rail connectivity in the region, besides improving passenger mobility and facilitating movement of goods. By providing improved access to markets and important destinations, the project is expected to support regional trade, tourism and economic development.
In another significant initiative to strengthen railway infrastructure, he also dedicated three Rail Over Bridges constructed at a total cost of over Rs.120 crore which will facilitate smoother movement of trains, enhance line capacity and improve operational efficiency. They will also help ease congestion at busy level crossings in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, reduce waiting time for road users and enhance safety for commuters.
Southern Railway said local ceremonial Railway functions were held at the five Amrit Bharat Stations and they were graced by elected representatives and dignitaries.
The main programme at Kendriya Vidyalaya ground at the IIT-Madras campus, where the Prime Minister will launch/dedicate these projects at an official function, along with other developmental projects worth Rs 13,000 crores spred over multiple sectors, was live streamed at all the five locations.
On the five redeveloped Amrit Stations, it said Ambasamudram Railway Station in Tirunelveli district, on the Tirunelveli–Tenkasi section of Madurai Division, has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs.13 crore, while Palani Railway Station in Dindigul district, on the Dindigul–Pollachi section of Madurai Division, has been redeveloped at about Rs.20 crore. The Namakkal Railway Station on the Salem–Karur section of Salem Division, has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs.17 crore, the Paramakkudi Railway Station in Ramanathapuram district, on the Madurai–Manamadurai–Rameswaram section of Madurai Division, at a cost of Rs.14 crore and Vellore Cantonment Station in Vellore district, on the Katpadi–Villupuram section of Tiruchirappalli Division, at a cost of Rs.eight crores.
Officials said the 23 km Karaikal–Peralam new Line, developed at a cost of over Rs.550 crore, is an important milestone in strengthening railway connectivity in Tamil Nadu. This rail link has provides a direct route between Karaikal and the Mayiladuthurai–Tiruvarur rail corridor, reducing travel time for passengers. It also provides rail connectivity to Karaikal Port, enabling faster movement of cargo like coal, fertilisers and food grains to industries and markets. This will support trade, freight movement and economic growthin the region, besides benefitting pilgrims and tourists by providing easier access to the famous Thirunallar Lord Saneeswarar Temple and other important destinations in the region.
The three Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) in the Textile city of Coimbatore built at an investment of over Rs.120 crore will enhance railway capacity, improve operational efficiency and ensure smoother movement of trains. For years, closed level crossings on busy roads in Coimbatore led to long queues of buses, trucks, ambulances, school vans and two wheelers. The ROBs will allow road traffic to move without waiting for trains and enable trains to operate without interruptions.
For the people of Coimbatore and nearby areas, these flyovers will reduce congestion, save travel time, improve road safety and ensure smoother movement of passengers and goods.
Together, these railway projects represent an important step in the ongoing modernisation of railway infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. By improving passenger facilities, strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing the efficiency of rail operations, the initiatives will contribute to Tamil Nadu’s industrial, commercial and tourism potential while supporting the aspirations of its people.
