Ravi's Apex Bank elevation follows Cong power tussle

Bengaluru, Sept 11 (UNI) The election of S Ravi as chairman of the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank followed an intense power struggle within the ruling Congress, with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Cooperation Minister Laxman Savadi initially backing different candidates for the crucial first two-and-a-half-year term.
While Shivakumar wanted Ravi to head the bank for the first term, Savadi favoured former minister KN Rajanna, leading to a deadlock as both camps insisted on securing the first stint rather than leaving it to a future power-sharing arrangement.
The contest acquired added significance as the proposed second term falls in 2029, after the 2028 Assembly elections. With the election capable of changing the political equations, neither side was willing to risk waiting for the second term, making the first 2½-year tenure particularly important.
