Kerala CM defends Rahul Gandhi, hits out at Rajeev Chandrasekhar over personal attacks

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 28 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Monday strongly defended Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and hit out at BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar over his personal remarks against the Congress leader.
Satheesan said the Congress and Rahul Gandhi were standing up for democracy and secularism and questioned whether any BJP leader, including Chandrasekhar, could “place a hand on their chest” and truthfully claim to be committed to safeguarding secularism.
He alleged that Chandrasekhar had resorted to personal attacks against Rahul Gandhi, who, he said, had a place in the hearts of millions of Indians.
“Neither the Congress movement nor the civil society of Kerala will tolerate this under any circumstances,” he said.
The Chief Minister said occupying a position that demanded political dignity and cultural decorum while resorting to “baseless allegations and cheap rhetoric” only exposed what he termed Chandrasekhar's “political bankruptcy”.
He also cautioned the BJP leader that while pointing a finger at Rahul Gandhi, the remaining fingers pointed back at himself.
Satheesan said serious concerns were emerging over the credibility of the Election Commission and the impartiality of autonomous institutions.
He alleged that when the Constitution and democratic institutions were “surrendered to serve sectarian interests”, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress raised their voices against it, causing discomfort to the Sangh Parivar.
Attempts to divert public attention from the real issues through what he described as “fascist-style rhetoric” would not succeed, he said.
Satheesan said the struggle by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress to protect fundamental rights and ensure equal justice could not be weakened by threats or intimidation.
He urged Chandrasekhar and the BJP to set aside what he termed hollow claims and “anti-people policies” and demonstrate the integrity to address genuine public issues.
The exchange comes amid a political row between Satheesan and Chandrasekhar over the latter's remarks against Rahul Gandhi in connection with the ongoing controversy surrounding the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Chandrasekhar had called Rahul Gandhi a “fraud” and said he would stop using the term if Gandhi apologised to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission.
