Vijayendra slams Cong over milk price hike, announces statewide protests

Bengaluru, Nov 3 (UNI) Karnataka BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Tuesday accused the Congress government of burdening the common people by increasing milk prices, alleging that the hike during the festive season had added to the financial distress of households.
Speaking to reporters here, he said the government should have borne the additional cost of supporting milk producers instead of passing the burden on to consumers. Describing the decision as unjustifiable, he announced that the BJP would launch protests across Karnataka against the price hike.
"The government has imposed an additional burden on people instead of allowing them to live peacefully. The party will take to the streets on behalf of the people," he said.
Vijayendra also accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders of targeting constitutional institutions because they were unable to accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity. He alleged that the Congress was questioning the legitimacy of the Modi government despite having been rejected by the electorate.
The BJP has launched a nationwide awareness campaign titled 'Save Democracy, Eradicate Anarchy' to counter what it described as the Congress's anti-democratic conduct. The campaign would be launched in Karnataka from Kolar through a public outreach programme, he said.
BJP national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Harish Dwivedi, former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, along with other senior leaders, would participate in the campaign's padayatra, he added.
Clarifying his remarks against the Congress at Davanagere last week, Vijayendra said he had spoken out of anger and expressed regret if his choice of words had hurt anyone. He said he had no intention of deliberately hurting anybody and urged the Congress government to correct its mistakes.
He alleged that the government had failed to reform the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and was playing with the future of job aspirants.
Despite nearly 2.5 lakh vacancies, recruitment had not been taken up adequately, forcing candidates to wait for years after appearing for examinations. He also accused the government of failing to effectively defend reservation-related issues.
Referring to the recent MLC election results, Vijayendra said Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara had failed to understand the public mood, alleging that voters were unhappy with the Congress government.
He claimed that the Congress had failed to fulfil its promises after coming to power and said voters would teach the party a lesson in the forthcoming Hiriyur by-election.
On the alleged sting operation controversy involving former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Vijayendra accused the Congress government of targeting the JD(S) leader instead of identifying those actually responsible.
He alleged that the sting operation could eventually create trouble for Shivakumar and claimed that pressure for a change of leadership had already begun within the Congress.
