Restless Left rattles TVK govt with DMK option, questions Vijay’s silence on ‘vote chori’

MC Rajan
Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI) Rattling the minority Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, the Left Parties, extending outside support to the Ministry, have made it clear that their return to the opposition DMK-led alliance still remains an option open to them and that they are not averse to it.
The Left Parties are troubled and anguished at Vijay not showing enough courage in taking on the BJP and the RSS, as well as his prolonged silence on ‘vote chori.
“We will align with those who are committed to taking on the Modi government and the BJP-RSS ideologically. That is our political yardstick, for, we consider the BJP-RSS as an existential danger to Parliamentary democracy. And we expect Vijay, as the Chief Minister, to be very open and louder in opposing both,” CPI state secretary M Veerapandian has said recently, adding, “the DMK is a secular party with a mass base and not a political untouchable. It is very vocal about vote chori unlike the TVK.”
“What prevents Vijay from taking on the Modi government’s anti-democratic policies, the threat to the nation’s pluralistic character and the communalism of the RSS? Every opposition party had opposed vote chori, but why hasn’t Vijay uttered a word?” he questioned in an interview to a TV channel. “Participation of TVK ministers in Vote chori protests is not enough. It is Vijay, as the leader of the party and Chief Minister, who should come out in the open,” he added.
“We are not in alliance with the TVK. We faced the assembly election in the DMK-led front and have four MLAs (2 each for CPI and CPI(M). Our support to the TVK to form the government is to prevent BJP’s proxy rule through the Governor, since the TVK didn’t have the majority,” was his defence of the Left leaving the DMK alliance and supporting the Vijay government from outside.
The Left parties have been agitated at some of the decisions of the government and have been instrumental in forcing them to retract them. Recently, the CPI(M) had condemned the circular regarding government employees expressing their opinion or criticism of policies of both the State and the union Governments. The Left has also been pressing for a GO rescinding the earlier GO on construction of the secretariat complex at the Pattinapakkam coast close to the Marina. Veerapandian also led a protest of fisherfolk earlier in the day.
The Left holding out a threat of returning to the DMK-alliance fold, comes close on the heels of the TVK winning the two seats in the bypoll – Madurantakam and Dharapuram, where turncoats from AIADMK, who resigned their MLA posts, were re-nominated. The Left contested both the seats but failed to make a mark, finished a poor fifth and forfeited deposits.
“The TVK-led alliance, comprising former DMK allies, Congress, VCK and IUML, being christened ‘Secular, Social Justice Victory Alliance’ is not enough; Vijay should break his silence on the BJP and Modi,” Veerapandian, said, clearly setting the bar. However, it remains to be seen whether Vijay would take the bait.
