Telangana Dy CM lays foundation stone for new bus station

Khammam, June 23 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Batti Vikramarka and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new RTC bus station and inaugurated new buses at Madhira in Khammam district on Monday.
The project, taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, marks a significant development in public transport infrastructure in the region.
The new bus station is being constructed on a two-acre site to mark the completion of 35 years of the Madhira Bus Station, which was established in 1990 with four platforms.
The upgraded facility will feature 10 platforms and 24 bus pits, and will be strategically connected to the nearby railway station to improve passenger convenience. Following the ceremony, the Deputy Chief Minister and the Transport Minister also travelled in one of the newly launched RTC buses.
Speaking at the event, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the Congress government had initiated free RTC bus travel for women within 48 hours of assuming office.
He criticised the previous government for not purchasing a single new bus or recruiting staff for RTC in the past 10 years, and for creating financial hardships by mismanaging employee provident and cooperative society funds. He recalled the 55-day RTC strike during the previous regime and said that the sacrifices made by workers then had gone unnoticed.
The Minister noted that the new Congress government had infused new life into RTC, increasing demand for services, purchasing new buses, and initiating fresh recruitment. He said women are now becoming owners of buses through associations, and that so far, 186 crore women have availed free travel, saving Rs 6,235 crore.
The government is also committed to improving infrastructure, including building new bus stations and providing facilities like toilets, waiting halls, and shopping complexes at the Madhira station.

There are currently seven RTC depots operating in the erstwhile Khammam district—at Khammam, Madhira, Sathupalli, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem, Manuguru, and Illandu. These depots operate a total of 548 buses daily, covering 2.62 lakh km and transporting over 2.1 lakh passengers. Of these, about 1.32 lakh passengers travel in Mahalaxmi Express and Palle Velugu buses.
The Madhira depot, inaugurated in 1987 with just six buses, now operates 70 buses daily with a staff of 218, running 29,430 kilometers and carrying 20,000 passengers, including 12,000 in the popular Mahalaxmi Express and Palle Velugu services.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also highlighted the government’s commitment to broader development, stating that nearly Rs 5,000 crore has been disbursed so far under the Rythu Bharosa scheme.
