Pay compensation to seed producers in Gadwal District: Farmers' Commission

Hyderabad, June 23 (UNI) Farmers' Commission Chairman Kodanda Reddy on Monday urged seed companies to immediately pay compensation to cotton seed producers in Jogulamba Gadwal district, who suffered losses during the recent season.
Addressing a meeting with representatives of seed companies at the Farmers' Commission office in BRK Bhavan, Reddy emphasised that companies must act with accountability and empathy towards farmers.
The meeting comes in the wake of serious complaints from farmers alleging exploitation by organisers operating under the name JVOT. Following these complaints, the Farmers’ Commission visited Gadwal district on June 13 to gather inputs directly from affected farmers.
During a review meeting held at the district Collectorate, the commission expressed strong displeasure over the exploitative practices of some organisers linked to the seed companies.
Chairman Kodanda Reddy stated that seed companies must not behave arbitrarily and should consider the plight of farmers, who play a vital role in making Telangana a hub for seed production.
He said it is the responsibility of these companies not just to source seeds but also to support farmers during times of distress. He demanded that a clear decision on compensation be made within a day or two.
Commission members KVN Reddy, Gopal Reddy, and Bhavani Reddy criticised the role of the organisers and said their actions were tarnishing the reputation of the seed companies.
They further warned that charging interest to farmers under the guise of organising seed production is a punishable offense. The members questioned how seeds supplied by companies could fail in the GOT (Grow-Out Test) if they were of standard quality.
After extensive deliberations, several seed companies expressed willingness to compensate the affected farmers. Former Alampur MLA Sampath Kumar also participated in the meeting and highlighted the hardships faced by farmers in the region. UNI VV SSP
