Treated wastewater use mandatory for non-potable needs in Hyderabad from Nov 1

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed civic authorities to enforce mandatory use of treated wastewater for non-potable purposes across Greater Hyderabad from November 1 to conserve freshwater resources and meet the city's growing water demand.
Reviewing the functioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and treated-water utilisation, the Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure supplies for landscaping, road cleaning, maintenance of public parks and government offices, and operations at major infrastructure facilities.
He directed officials to supply treated water to the State Secretariat, Chief Minister's camp office, data centres, Metro Rail and Railways, besides using it for road cleaning along the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
Revanth Reddy instructed officials to make the use of treated wastewater part of the building permit approval process and encourage private agencies to establish sewage treatment plants to increase treatment capacity.
Emphasising technology-driven management, he called for using artificial intelligence in STP operations and integrating all treatment plants with the Command and Control Centre. He also directed the appointment of a special officer to monitor treated-water quality and authorised HYDRAA to monitor STPs.
The Chief Minister stressed the need to create public awareness about treated-water utilisation and establish a toll-free number to address public queries and requests.
He also ordered the introduction of a tracking mechanism for treated-water tankers to monitor their movement and supplies.
In view of rising electricity demand, he asked officials to explore the feasibility of using solar energy to operate STPs and encourage private agencies to establish treatment facilities.
The Chief Minister also reviewed drinking water availability in Hyderabad and asked Water Board officials to take proactive measures to prevent shortages.
He stressed continuous monitoring of freshwater supplies and advance planning to meet the city's future requirements.
