VP CPR arrives on short visit to TN, inaugurates UPASI centenary event

Chennai, Sep 21 (UNI) Vice President C.P.Radhakrishnan arrived in Coimbatore on a short visit to Tamil Nadu on Monday.
He was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival at Coimbatore International Airport. He was received at the airport by Governor of Tamil Nadu and Keralam Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar; Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar; and other dignitaries.
After a brief reception, he proceeded to Coonoor in the hilly Nilgiris district by a helicopter where he attended the Centenary conference of the UPASI (United Planters’ Association of Southern India) Tea Research Foundation.
After the event, he would return to Coimbatore and leave for New Delhi.
Security has been tightened at Coimbatore and the Nilgirs district in view of the VIP's visit. Flying of drones and other UAVs were banned and the police has warned off stringent action if the order was violated.
The conference celebrates 100 years of continuous service by the Tea Scientific Department to the South Indian tea industry since its establishment in October 1926, according to United Planters' Association of Southern India (UPASI) President, Ajoy Thipaiah.
Following the inauguration, an international conference and plantation expo featuring scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders
will be held for two days from tomorrow. The technical deliberations will center around four expert pillars :Sustainable Tea--Pathways for the future, Climate-Smart Tea--Innovations for resilience; Smart Tea--AgTech for transformation and Frontiers of Tea--Scientific breakthroughs for the next century.
