Public urged to remain alert amid heavy rains in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, Sept 22 (UNI) GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg on Tuesday urged people to remain alert as heavy rains lashed Visakhapatnam and moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next two days.
The Commissioner directed officials and staff of all GVMC departments and zonal offices to remain fully prepared to deal with any emergency and asked Zonal Commissioners to maintain special vigil in low-lying, flood-prone and vulnerable areas.
Rapid Response Teams have been kept ready in all zones, with adequate manpower, vehicles, JCBs, water suction machines and other equipment being made available.
Zonal Commissioners were instructed to maintain continuous coordination with the City Operations Centre (COC) and take immediate action based on the ground situation.
The COC will remain operational round-the-clock to monitor the situation across the city and collect field-level information, Garg said.
Officials were directed to immediately report incidents of fallen trees and branches, waterlogging, overflowing drains, damaged roads, landslides and wall collapses to the concerned departments and initiate prompt remedial measures. Public alerts and information would also be issued as required.
The Engineering, Water Supply, Electrical, Mechanical, Public Health, UCD, Town Planning and Horticulture departments were asked to work in close coordination to ensure the free flow of water through drains and culverts, clear waterlogged areas and remove fallen trees, branches and debris from roads to restore traffic movement.
Officials were also instructed to take precautionary measures to prevent disruption to drinking water and power supply.
People living in low-lying and vulnerable areas should be shifted to safer locations in advance wherever necessary, the Commissioner said.
As many as 55 rehabilitation centres have been identified for 55 vulnerable areas within GVMC limits. Advance arrangements have been made to accommodate around 12,765 people from 3,583 households if required.
Officials were directed to ensure drinking water, food, electricity and sanitation facilities at the rehabilitation centres.
Garg appealed to citizens to avoid venturing out during heavy rains unless necessary and exercise caution near flooded roads, overflowing and open drains, weak walls, trees and electric poles.
