India storm to seven-medal haul on action-packed Day 8 of Asian Games

Nagoya, Sept 27 (UNI) India turned Day 8 of the Asian Games into a medal-making frenzy, harvesting seven medals in a late burst led by athletics, while squash produced a silver double and boxing guaranteed three more podium finishes.
After a relatively quiet start to the day, India's campaign exploded into life in the second half as Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the women's long jump and men's high jump respectively, while Tejaswin Shankar and Parul Chaudhary added bronze medals in the decathlon and 3000m steeplechase.
Harita Bhadra then produced one of the day's most dramatic finishes, snatching bronze in the women's 200m by just 0.01 seconds in a photo finish.
The seven-medal haul comprised four silver and three bronze, underlining the breadth of India's challenge across disciplines at Aichi-Nagoya.
Ancy came agonisingly close to gold in the long jump. Her 6.53m effort left her just two centimetres behind China's Huang Yingying, who produced a 6.55m final leap to steal the title.
Shaili Singh, who had been in medal contention for much of the competition, finished fourth with 6.42m.
Sarvesh also had to settle for silver on countback after clearing 2.25m, the same height as Chinese Taipei's Fu Chao-hsuan. Fu cleared the height at the first attempt, while Sarvesh needed two. Both failed to clear 2.28m.
Tejaswin, however, completed a memorable decathlon campaign with bronze on 7,934 points, adding a second Asian Games medal to the silver he won at Hangzhou. Japan's Yuma Maruyama took gold with 8,123 points and China's Chen Xinghua silver with 8,012.
Parul Chaudhary produced perhaps the most significant performance of her campaign, clocking 9:08.67 for bronze in the women's 3000m steeplechase and rewriting the national record in the process.
She stayed in contention with Bahrain's Winfred Yavi until the final lap before fading away. Yavi won gold in an Asian Games record 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan's Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver in 9:06.82.
Parul's bronze was her third Asian Games medal, following her silver in the steeplechase and gold in the 5000m at Hangzhou 2023.
Harita's bronze came after a finish so tight that even the athlete herself was unsure of the result. Her 23.20 seconds edged the fourth-placed runner by one-hundredth of a second.
Singapore's Shanti Pereira won gold in 22.78, while China's Chen Yujie took silver in 22.93.
Squash provided India with another double-silver disappointment as Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh both fell at the final hurdle.
Anahat, playing her first Asian Games singles final, lost 4-11, 4-11, 7-11 to Malaysia's world No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam.
Abhay went down 9-11, 5-11, 5-11 to Malaysia's Ng Eain Yow in the men's final.
For both Indians, however, the medals marked significant progress. Anahat added singles silver to the mixed doubles and team bronzes she won at Hangzhou, while Abhay claimed his third Asian Games medal after his team gold and mixed doubles bronze in 2023.
Boxing ensured the medal rush did not stop there.
Ankush Panghal stormed into the men's 80kg semi-finals with a 5-0 victory over Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov. Parveen Hooda followed with an equally emphatic 5-0 win over Uzbekistan's world silver medallist Navbakhor Khamidova in the women's 65kg quarter-final.
Narender Berwal needed less than two minutes to assure India another medal, stopping Thailand's Adthapong Saengtep in the first round of their men's 90kg quarter-final after forcing three standing counts.
India's women's hockey team also maintained its unbeaten march, completing a perfect pool-stage campaign with a 7-0 demolition of Singapore.
Salima Tete, Sunelita Toppo, Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Nikki Pradhan and Deepika were on target as India registered five wins from five and advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face South Korea.
There were further encouraging signs in athletics, with national record-holder Mohammed Afsal reaching the men's 800m final, while Vithya Ramraj and Anu Raghavan qualified for the women's 400m hurdles final. Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan also entered the men's 400m hurdles final.
India's women's 4x100m relay team of Tamanna, Sneha Satyanarayana Shanuvalli, Sudeshna Shivankar and Abinaya Rajarajan qualified for the final with a season-best 43.65.
Archery added to the momentum, with India's men's and women's recurve teams reaching the semi-finals. Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod also advanced to the mixed recurve semi-finals, while Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav entered the compound mixed team last four.
The day was less rewarding in badminton, where PV Sindhu's quarter-final defeat to China's Chen Yufei ended India's campaign in the sport with just the men's team bronze.
India nevertheless finished a hectic Day 8 with medals spread across athletics, squash and boxing, while also advancing deep into hockey, archery and athletics events.
The message from Aichi-Nagoya was clear: India's medal challenge is no longer resting on a handful of disciplines, with the contingent continuing to find podium finishes across the sporting spectrum.
