India Women Storm Into Hockey Semis With Fourth Straight Win

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) India’s women’s hockey team passed a significant test at the Asian Games with a composed 3-1 victory over hosts Japan to storm into the semifinals and preserve their unbeaten record in Pool B here on Friday.
Lalremsiami Hmarzote, Ishika Chaudhary and Navneet Kaur scored for India as the team combined attacking intent with disciplined defending to register their fourth consecutive victory.
India made a quick start, with Lalremsiami breaking the deadlock in the fifth minute with a field goal. The Indians continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage just before half-time when Ishika found the net from a rebound after Navneet’s initial effort was saved.
Navneet then produced a moment of individual brilliance six minutes into the third quarter, collecting the ball inside the circle before scooping it over the Japanese goalkeeper into the far corner to make it 3-0.
Japan fought back in the final quarter and reduced the deficit through Shiho Kobayakawa, who scored with a backhand strike from the top of the circle in the 46th minute.
India, however, held their defensive shape under sustained pressure in the closing stages and denied the hosts any further openings to secure a crucial win.
The victory extended India’s impressive scoring run in Pool B. They had opened their campaign with a 19-0 demolition of Uzbekistan, followed it with a 17-1 win over Indonesia and then thrashed Thailand 20-1.
Against Japan, India showed a more controlled side of their game after the goal-heavy opening matches, maintaining pressure while remaining organised at the back.
India will complete their Pool B campaign against Singapore on Sunday before turning their attention to the semifinals, where they will continue their pursuit of the Asian Games title.
