Six-medal surge powers India’s biggest Asian Games day yet

Nagoya, Sept 25 (UNI) India produced its biggest medal haul of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday, winning six medals, including a gold, two silver and three bronze, as shooting hit the bullseye, athletics delivered three podium finishes and both kabaddi teams stormed into the gold-medal finals.
The medal rush began with Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet striking gold in the mixed team 10m air pistol with an Asian Games record score of 484, giving India its first shooting gold of the Games and second gold overall.
Shooting added a silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team event, with Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil and Niraj Kumar finishing second.
Athletics then took centre stage.
Gulveer Singh clinched silver in the men’s 10,000m in 28:29.38, finishing just behind Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, while Albert Kiptoo took bronze. It was Gulveer’s second Asian Games medal after his bronze at Hangzhou 2023.
Manpreet Kaur ended a long wait for an Asian Games medal by winning bronze in the women’s shot put with a best effort of 17.17m.
But the day’s most historic moment came from Baranica Elangovan, who became the first Indian to win an Asian Games medal in pole vault across both genders.
Elangovan cleared 4.15m and shared the bronze with Kazakhstan’s Polina Ivanova. Both athletes failed at 4.25m.
Her achievement capped a remarkable turnaround after an ACL injury in 2020 and years of rehabilitation. She had raised the national record to 4.23m earlier this year.
Table tennis added another landmark medal as Diya Chitale and Manush Shah secured bronze in mixed doubles. They lost 0-4 to reigning Olympic champions Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha of China in the semifinals, but ensured India’s fourth Asian Games medal in the sport.
The kabaddi courts also witnessed a double surge into the finals.
The defending champions India men demolished Thailand 66-28 in the semifinal to set up a gold-medal clash with Iran, while the women defeated Nepal 48-24 to enter the final. India’s women will face the winner of the Iran-Chinese Taipei semifinal.
India also strengthened its position in women’s hockey, defeating hosts Japan 3-1 to reach the semifinals with a perfect four wins from four Pool B matches. Lalremsiami Hmarzote, Navneet Kaur and Ishika scored for India.
On the athletics track, Vishal TK powered into the men’s 400m final with a 45.27-second heat win, the fastest time across the three heats. Kiran Pahal and Prachi also qualified for the women’s 400m final.
Squash produced two more medal assurances, with Anahat Singh reaching the women’s singles semifinals after beating compatriot Tanvi Khanna 3-0, while Abhay Singh entered the men’s semifinals with a 3-0 win over Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue.
There were setbacks too, most notably the first-round exit of defending badminton champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who lost to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun.
India’s swimming campaign ended with Rishabh Das finishing sixth in the 200m backstroke after breaking his own national record with 1:58.77. Sajan Prakash finished seventh in the 200m butterfly.
Sachin Siwach moved into the boxing quarterfinals in the men’s 60kg category after defeating former Asian champion Mohammad Abu Jajeh of Jordan 4-1, while surfing saw Kishore Kumar advance directly to the third round after topping his heat.
With six medals and finals secured in both kabaddi events, Day 6 turned into a defining day for India at Aichi-Nagoya, combining a record-equalling medal haul with historic breakthroughs and a series of strong advances ahead of the weekend.
