India’s kabaddi teams storm into Asian Games finals

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) Defending champions India marched into the men’s and women’s kabaddi finals at the Asian Games here on Friday with commanding victories, keeping alive their bid for a double gold.
The Indian men produced a clinical 66-28 victory over Thailand, while the women defeated Nepal 48-24 to seal their places in the gold-medal matches.
The men dominated from the start and went into the break with a 37-18 lead. Thailand managed to inflict an all-out during a brief period of resistance, but India quickly regained control and struck back with two all-outs of their own.
India continued to pull away after the interval, producing another relentless attacking display and eventually completing a 38-point victory. The defending champions inflicted four all-outs in the contest.
The women were equally authoritative against Nepal, overcoming an energetic opening spell from their opponents before taking control. Nepal’s Ganga Ghimire produced a super raid early on, but India responded with sustained pressure and led 31-17 at half-time after inflicting two all-outs.
India maintained their superiority in the second half and completed a 24-point win, registering three all-outs in the match. Pooja, Sanju Devi and Sonali Singh spearheaded the Indian raiding attack.
India’s women will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Iran and Chinese Taipei in the final.
With both teams through to the title clash, India now have an opportunity to defend their crowns and secure a kabaddi gold-medal double at Aichi-Nagoya.
The twin victories add to a strong day for the Indian contingent, which also secured medals in shooting, squash and table tennis, besides the women’s hockey team reaching the semifinals.
