Joshna-Velavan Storm Into Semis, Assure India Squash Medal

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) Experience and youth combined to assure India of a squash medal as veteran Joshna Chinappa and Asian Games debutant Velavan Senthilkumar stormed into the mixed doubles semifinals with a commanding straight-games victory here on Friday.
The Indian pair brushed aside the Philippines’ Jemyca Aribado and David Pelino 11-3, 11-5 in the quarterfinals to secure at least a bronze medal.
Joshna and Velavan seized control from the opening rally, racing to a 3-0 lead and then pulling away to 9-2 before closing out the first game 11-3.
The Philippines pair showed greater resistance in the second, but the Indians again established an early 3-0 advantage. After allowing their opponents to narrow the gap, Joshna and Velavan raised the tempo to move clear and sealed the game 11-5.
The victory marked another landmark moment for Joshna, who is making her seventh successive Asian Games appearance. The 40-year-old, who debuted at the 2002 Busan Games, is now assured of her sixth Asian Games medal.
Joshna has previously won two silver and three bronze medals at the continental Games.
For Velavan, the semifinal berth is a major milestone on his Asian Games debut, with the 28-year-old combining with Joshna to form a potent mix of experience and attacking play.
The Indian duo will face Hong Kong, China’s Lee Ka Yi and Tang Ming Hong in the semifinal on Saturday, with a place in the gold-medal match at stake.
The medal is India’s latest success in squash at Aichi-Nagoya and keeps the country in contention for a place in the mixed doubles final.
