Asian Games cricket: India to face Afghanistan in quarter-final as rain threatens knockouts

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) Defending champions India will face Afghanistan in the quarter-finals of the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games on September 28, with rain threatening to disrupt the knockout stage in Aichi-Nagoya.
India, along with Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, had received direct entry into the quarter-finals as the four top-seeded teams. Afghanistan and Nepal progressed from Group A, while Malaysia and Hong Kong advanced from Group B.

Pakistan will face Hong Kong in the other quarter-final on September 28, while Sri Lanka will take on Nepal and Bangladesh will meet Malaysia on September 29.

The group stage was hit by rain on Saturday, with the Japan-Nepal match abandoned without a ball being bowled. The Malaysia-Oman contest was also washed out, resulting in Oman’s elimination.
The weather could again play a major role in the quarter-finals. Monday’s forecast has a 91 per cent chance of rain during the daytime, when the first two matches are scheduled, along with a 22 per cent chance of thunderstorms. Tuesday’s forecast is similarly wet, with an 89 per cent chance of rain and an 18 per cent possibility of thundershowers.

If a quarter-final is washed out without a result, the higher-seeded team will advance based on the ICC’s official T20I rankings.

The weather outlook is more favourable for the semifinals on Thursday and the medal playoffs on Saturday, with fewer chances of rain currently forecast.

India won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, beating Afghanistan in the final. Bangladesh claimed bronze after defeating Pakistan in the third-place playoff.
