Asian Games: India win 7 medals on Day 7, tally rises to 30

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) India’s kabaddi teams completed a golden double against Iran while the women’s 50m rifle 3P team, shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and marathon runner Sawan Barwal added silver medals on a productive Day 7 at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya today.
India added seven medals to take their tally to 30, including four gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze, and move to 10th in the standings.
The day’s highlights also included bronze medals for the mixed doubles squash pair of Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar and Prachi Choudhary in women’s 400m event, while Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh moved into the squash singles finals and kept their hopes of earning a direct ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics alive. The squash singles gold medallists at the Asian Games will earn direct qualification for LA 2028.
Anahat produced one of the day’s biggest comebacks, recovering from two games down to beat world No. 6 Satomi Watanabe of Japan 3-2 (9-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-3). The 19-year-old saved match points at 7-10 in the third game before winning three straight games to complete a remarkable turnaround.
Abhay Singh also reached the men’s singles final with a 3-0 (11-3, 12-10, 11-6) win over Pakistan’s Muhammad Irfan.
On the athletics track, Barwal ended India’s 44-year wait for a men’s marathon medal by winning silver in a national-record 2:11:37. The 28-year-old Army runner improved his own national mark by 21 seconds and became the first Indian to win an Asian Games marathon medal outside the country. Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita won gold in 2:10:49, while China’s Peiyou Feng took bronze in 2:12:13. India’s other runner, Kartik Karkera, finished 17th in 2:22:41.
Barwal had made his marathon debut only earlier this year, breaking Shivnath Singh’s 48-year-old national record in Rotterdam before lowering his own mark in Nagoya.
Toor, meanwhile, had to settle for silver in the men’s shot put as Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebise produced a Games-record throw of 20.81m. Toor’s 20.64m was enough for second place as he missed out on a third successive Asian Games gold. Karanveer Singh finished 10th.
Prachi Choudhary won bronze in the women’s 400m, clocking 53.21 seconds. She edged South Korea’s Kim Seoyoon by 0.17 seconds, while Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser won gold in a Games-record time. Kiran Pahal finished fifth in 53.41.
The day began with India winning silver in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions team event. Tilottama Sen, Vidarsa K Vinod and Ashi Chouksey combined for 1,763 points, finishing behind China, who won gold with 1,773 to equal their Games record from Hangzhou.
Sen then narrowly missed an individual medal, finishing fourth in the 50m rifle 3P final, with Vinod fifth. Chouksey did not make the final.
In hockey, defending champions India beat hosts Japan 2-0 in their fourth Pool A match to qualify for the men’s semi-finals. Abhishek and Harmanpreet Singh scored for India, who will face Bangladesh in their final pool game on Monday.
In squash, Joshna and Velavan secured bronze after losing 2-1 (11-10, 2-11, 11-10) to Hong Kong, China’s Lee Ka Yi and Tang Ming Hong in the mixed doubles semi-finals. The medal was Joshna’s sixth at the Asian Games and extended her record of podium finishes at every Games since Guangzhou 2010.
India also made progress in several athletics events. Tejaswin Shankar finished the opening day of the decathlon in first place, with Thowfeeq Noushad eighth.
Animesh Kujur qualified for the men’s 200m final after finishing second in his semi-final. Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Bolland also advanced to the women’s 200m final after finishing second and third in their respective heats.
Yoonus Shah and Gulveer Singh progressed to the men’s 1500m final after finishing third in their heats.
Jyothi Yarraji, a 2023 Asian Games medallist, did not start the women’s 100m hurdles, while Nandhini Kongan qualified for the final with a 13.48-second run. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Praveen Chithravel withdrew from the men’s triple jump final after suffering an injury. Karthik Unnikrishnan finished sixth with 15.96m. Vishal TK was fifth in the men’s 400m in 45.48 seconds.
In equestrian, Asian Games medallists Hriday Chheda and Jai Sud qualified for the individual dressage final after finishing 11th and 13th respectively in the qualifiers. Shruti Vora was 24th.
India’s table tennis campaign ended after Manush Shah lost 4-0 to China’s former world No. 1 Lin Shidong in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals. Yashaswini Ghorpade was also knocked out in the women’s singles Round of 16 after losing 4-1 to Japan’s world No. 3 Miwa Harimoto.
Badminton saw mixed fortunes. Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty were eliminated from the men’s singles, while 19-year-old Unnati Hooda upset world No. 6 Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia 21-19, 21-13 to reach the women’s singles quarter-finals.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also advanced to the women’s doubles quarter-finals, beating Japan’s world No. 3 pair Mayu Matsumoto and Yuki Fukushima 24-22, 21-18.
In boxing, Priya Ganghas and Kapil Pokhariya advanced to the quarter-finals with unanimous-decision wins over South Korea’s Oh Yeon-ji and Iran’s Sam Estaki respectively. Jadumani Singh, however, lost 3-0 to Olympic silver medallist Carlo Paalam of the Philippines in the men’s 55kg Round of 16.
Archer Dhiraj Bommadevara topped the men’s recurve qualification with an Asian Games record 698 points. Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhogal finished 20th and 25th, while India placed second in the team qualification.
In women’s compound, Chikitha Taniparthi led the qualification with 705 points, with Jyothi Surekha Vennam 12th and Prithika Poornima 20th. India were second in the team standings.
India’s canoe sprint campaign ended without a medal, with Raju Rawat and L Neha Devi finishing eighth in the mixed canoe double 500m final and Parvathy Geetha and Prasanna Kumar ninth in the mixed kayak double 500m. In fencing, the men’s sabre and women’s foil teams also bowed out in the quarter-finals, losing to South Korea and Japan respectively.
