Karnataka hikes Asian Games medal rewards, gold to get Rs 1 crore

Bengaluru, Oct 6 (UNI) The Karnataka government on Tuesday substantially enhanced cash rewards for its Asian Games medallists, raising the prize money for a gold medal to Rs 1 crore, silver to Rs 75 lakh and bronze to Rs 50 lakh.
The decision comes a day after Deputy Chief Minister and Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister G Parameshwara said the government was reconsidering the existing reward structure after athlete MR Poovamma sought higher incentives for medal-winning sportspersons.
According to an official statement from Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's office, the revised rewards will benefit eight sportspersons from Karnataka who won medals at the Asian Games 2026.
Under the revised scheme, gold medallists will receive Rs 1 crore, against the earlier Rs 35 lakh, while the silver medal reward has been increased from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 75 lakh and bronze from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
Cricketer Shreyanka Patil, a member of India's gold-medal winning women's team, and hockey player Mohit H.S., part of the gold-medal winning men's team, will receive Rs 1 crore each.
Poovamma, who won gold in the women's 4x400m relay and silver in the mixed 4x400m relay, will receive a total of Rs 1.75 crore.
Golfer Pranavi S Urs, who won an individual gold and was part of India's silver-medal winning golf team, will also receive Rs 1.75 crore.
Shooter Tilottama Sen and golfer Aditi Ashok, who won silver medals, will receive Rs 75 lakh each, while badminton player Ayush R Shetty and athlete SS Sneha, who won bronze medals, will get Rs 50 lakh each.
The eight medallists will also receive an additional Rs 5 lakh each as subsidy over and above the medal rewards.
In another major decision, the government has announced direct appointments to Group-B posts for Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medallists willing to join state government service. Their appointments will be considered by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary.
Under the Olympics Scheme for 2026-27, Asian Games medallists Poovamma, Sneha and Shreyanka, along with Commonwealth Games medallist Shilpa K.S., will receive Rs 10 lakh each to support their Olympic preparations.
The government has also issued a notification providing two per cent reservation for sportspersons in direct recruitment to all categories of state government posts, including Group-A, B, C and D.
Besides, 20 Karnataka sportspersons who represented India at the Asian Games will receive an incentive of Rs 5 lakh each.
The enhanced rewards follow Poovamma's criticism of the earlier Rs 35 lakh gold-medal incentive and her call for greater financial support to athletes. She had also expressed disappointment that no state leader or district official immediately contacted her to congratulate her after her Asian Games victory in Japan.
The revised package is being seen as a significant expansion of Karnataka's support for elite sport, combining higher medal incentives with employment opportunities, reservation and financial assistance for Olympic preparation.
