Mumbai Police treated tribal students like criminals, claims Maha NSUI President

Meanwhile, speaking to newsmen at the party head office Tilak Bhawan at Dadar West here today after being released by the police, the Congress-affiliated National Students' union of India (NSUI) Maharashtra president Sagar Salunkhe alleged that the Mumbai police treated tribal students from interior Maharashtra as if they were criminals.
He said, “The tribal students had already informed the authorities that they would protest at Azad Maidan. These students came from Nashik to Mumbai but when they went to seek permission for their protest, they were denied permission to protest.”
Salunkhe said that tribal students, who are 15 years old, have been protesting for the past 48 days. The tribal students came to Mumbai from Nashik after a long trek.
“At that time, the police were also with them, but some of them were arrested by the police while entering Mumbai. Since many of these tribal students did not have any accommodation facilities in Mumbai, they were accommodated in the Mumbai Congress Tilak Bhawan office in Dadar West. But nobody expected the police raid after midnight. It is clear that the police action was taken after direct instructions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself,” Salunkhe alleged.
“Some tribal boys and girls were beaten up. One student fell unconscious and some were released in Bhiwandi, on the outskirts of Mumbai. The police woke up the students who were sleeping in the Tilak Bhawan Mumbai Congress office and took them to the Yellow Gate police station. The police detained them like an accused and even detained an employee of the Congress office. Initially, they were taken to Dadar police station. Then they were shifted to a Chunabhatti police station and finally they wwere taken to Kopri police station,” NSUI Maharashtra state president Sagar Salunkhe added.
Mumbai NSUI President Pradyuman Yadav said that the police forcibly picked up the students as well as himself from the Congress Tilak Bhawan office.
The protesting tribal students told media persons that the police detained some of their colleagues on the road. They were coming out of the bathroom after taking a bath at the Tilak Bhavan Congress office when the police detained them.
The tribal students were not told where they were being taken or why they were held.
“The police did not even let us go to the washroom or give us water. There was no female police officer in the police van with us. They lied that they would take us to a place of worship. There is no clean drinking water in tribal schools. The food served is of extremely poor quality. There are no health facilities and despite continuous demands, the government kept making promises but did not do anything,” the tribal students told media persons.
The tribal students further told newsmen that they didn't have accommodation facilities in Mumbai or enough money to stay in a hotel.
“We came to the Congress office because the Congress office-bearers made arrangements for us. If the Chief Minister had made arrangements for us to stay, we would have gone there,” a tribal student claimed.
