Mumbai Police tighten security at Shivaji park ahead of CJP protest

Mumbai, Oct 2 (UNI) Mumbai Police on Friday tightened security and barricaded the main entrance to Shivaji Park in central Mumbai ahead of a proposed 'Jail Bharo Andolan' by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Police barricaded Gate No. 6 of the iconic ground and deployed security personnel to prevent the unauthorised gathering. The CJP has announced that the protest will be held at 4 pm despite the denial of permission by the police.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had sought permission to organise the protest at Shivaji Park.
However, police refused permission, citing a 2013 Bombay High Court order and the area's status as a silence zone. The police said they were not authorised to grant permission for a gathering at the venue.
Undeterred, Dipke continued his campaign to mobilise supporters. He was seen travelling in an autorickshaw through Mumbai streets, urging people to join the protest at Shivaji Park.
The CJP has raised three key demands, including the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, criminal proceedings against him and disclosure of the persons who allegedly issued instructions related to the electoral revision exercise.
The party has also demanded an immediate halt to the SIR process, restoration of the January 2025 electoral rolls and an independent inquiry into the exercise. Its third demand is the repeal of the 2023 law governing the appointment of election commissioners and the introduction of a transparent appointment mechanism with civil society participation.
A day before the proposed agitation, Dipke was briefly detained by Mumbai Police at Marine Drive and released after questioning.
Singer Vishal Dadlani has also announced his participation in the protest. In a social media post, he criticised Gyanesh Kumar and used the slogan "Go Gyanu Go", while appealing to Mumbaikars to assemble at Shivaji Park at 4 pm.
As part of the campaign ahead of the agitation, Dipke also met students at Ambedkar Hostel in Chembur. Photographs of the meeting were shared on his social media account.
The proposed agitation is part of the wider protests and political debate surrounding the SIR exercise and the revision of electoral rolls.
