Man held for cheating woman of Rs 90,000 in ATM walkie-talkie fraud

Palghar, Sep 24 (UNI) Boisar police in neghbouring Palghar district have arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly cheating a woman of Rs 90,000 by using a walkie-talkie to trick her at an ATM, police said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Jitendra Ramdev Pal, was arrested on September 18 following a technical investigation and information received by the police.
The incident took place on September 14 at an SBI ATM in Shivaji Nagar, Boisar, when the woman had gone there with her son-in-law to withdraw cash.
After withdrawing Rs 7,000, her debit card got stuck inside the ATM. The accused allegedly spoke to her through a walkie-talkie hidden inside the ATM cabin and claimed that he was monitoring her through the ATM camera.
He reportedly told her not to try to remove the card and instructed her to enter her PIN three times and press the cancel and enter buttons.
The woman was then allegedly asked to write down her mobile number and leave it at the ATM, with the assurance that the card would be removed by the operator the next day and returned to her.
After she left the ATM, the accused allegedly removed the card and used the PIN to withdraw Rs 90,000 from her Yes Bank account.
Following a complaint, Boisar police registered a case and began an investigation.
Police later arrested Pal and recovered Rs 60,000 in cash, two walkie-talkie sets allegedly used in the crime and a vehicle.
Inspector Sunil Jadhav said that investigation in the matter is going on and police is also probing the involment of other person in the crime .
