Computers stolen from Vasai Court Complex, Police register FIR

Mumbai, Oct 08 (UNI) Police registered an FIR after several computers and other electronic equipment were allegedly stolen from the Vasai District and Sessions Court premises in neighbouring Palghar district, police said on Thursday.
The theft was noticed on Wednesday during the afternoon and was immediately brought to the attention of the court authorities.
A senior police official said an FIR had been registered and efforts were underway to find out the exact number of computers and other items missing from the premises.
“We are checking the court premises and verifying the inventory. It is also being ascertained whether any documents or other electronic equipment are missing,” the official said.
The official added that this was the first reported theft from the court premises. District Judge Hemant B Sirsalkar and Magistrate U V Jadhav visited the court complex after the incident and reviewed the situation.
The incident has also raised concern among lawyers over security arrangements at the court complex.
Advocates said the existing premises require better security and infrastructure to ensure the safe custody of court records, computers and other official material.
Lawyers said the need for a modern and properly secured court complex had been raised several times, but the proposed development has been delayed due to procedural issues.
They said courts are visited daily by judges, lawyers, litigants, witnesses, police personnel and staff, making proper security and basic facilities essential.
Edrich Miranda, author of various law books who also appeared in various public interest matters in the different courts, said that the theft of computers from the court premises was a serious security concern, as such systems may contain important case-related data and records.
“The incident raises questions about security arrangements at the court complex. The authorities should thoroughly investigate the matter, identify those responsible and ensure that the data stored in the stolen computers is protected,” Miranda said.
He urged the authorities to review security arrangements, including surveillance cameras and access control, to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Police said the exact value of the stolen property would be known after the inventory and other formalities are completed. Further investigation is underway.
