Railway attendant held with Goa-made liquor worth Rs 71,560 at Thane station

Mumbai, Sep 24 (UNI) The State Excise Department has arrested a railway attendant for allegedly transporting Goa-manufactured liquor illegally into Maharashtra and seized 61 bottles of foreign liquor worth around Rs 71,560 from him at Thane Railway Station, officials said on Thursday.
Acting upon a tip-off regarding illegal transportation of liquor from Goa, a team kept watch at Platform No. 8 of Thane station and intercepted a man who got down from the Mangaluru Express carrying two bags.
The man was identified as Shivam Chanbas Mathpati, who told the officials that he worked as a railway attendant.
During a search of the bags, officials recovered 61 sealed bottles of foreign liquor of different brands and sizes, having a total quantity of 36.85 bulk litres.
The seized stock included bottles of Royal Challenge, Old Monk Coffee Rum, Royal Green, Oakmith Sanctory, Bacardi Gava, Black & White, Royal Stag, Kent 69 and Oakmith Gold, according to the department.
Two flasks containing black-and-blue coloured country liquor were also seized.The Excise Department registered Crime No. 257/2026 on September 23 under relevant provisions of the Bombay Prohibition Act.Mathpati was subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him to one day of excise custody.
The seized liquor has been confiscated by the department.
Officials are now investigating the source of the liquor, its intended destination and whether the accused was part of a larger network involved in transporting Goa liquor into Maharashtra.
