Three maternal deaths in three days at Gondia hospital in Maharashtra raise concerns

Gondia, Sep 24 (UNI) Three pregnant women died within three days at the Bai Gangabai Women's Hospital in Maharashtra's Gondia district, raising concerns over the functioning of the maternal healthcare system at the facility.
The deaths were reported between September 21 and 23. The cases involved women from rural areas who had been admitted for childbirth and subsequently developed complications.
Komal Satish Gajbhiye (24), from Navegaonbandh, was admitted on September 20 and underwent a caesarean section the following day. She was later shifted to the Government Medical College after developing difficulty in urination. Both her kidneys reportedly stopped functioning, and she died in the ICU on September 22.
Najuk Riyaz Shah (25), from Kachewani in Tiroda tehsil, delivered a baby girl through normal delivery on September 19. Her condition later deteriorated, and she died while undergoing treatment at the medical college on September 21. The exact cause of her death has not yet been established.
Pooja Rakesh Farkunde (24), a resident of Gonditola-Ghivri, also died on September 23. According to a report, she had been referred to the hospital from Rawandwadi Primary Health Centre and was found to have a haemoglobin level of only 5 grams. Her baby had also died before delivery.
The consecutive deaths have prompted calls for a detailed review of medical records, treatment procedures, emergency care, availability of specialist doctors and post-delivery monitoring at the hospital.
Family members have also demanded that the authorities investigate whether there were any lapses in the treatment and referral process.
