Centre remembers Gandhi only for tributes, ignores his teachings: Raj Thackeray

Mumbai, Oct 2 (UNI)Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Friday criticised the BJP-led central government on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, accusing it of remembering Gandhi through ceremonial tributes while ignoring his teachings on questioning authority. Thackeray said governments these days remember national figures such as Gandhi on their birth and death anniversaries through photo opportunities rather than by upholding their ideas and teachings.
In a social media post, Thackeray accused the ruling establishment and its supporters on social media of being intolerant of dissent and of branding those who question the government as “anti-national”.
Thackeray said, "Gandhi had taught citizens to question authority, but those in power today are unwilling to face such questions and use social media trolls to silence critics by labelling them as traitors."
He said governments had legal frameworks and state machinery at their disposal, but Gandhi had demonstrated that no administration could control an ordinary citizen's ability to think critically or their moral conscience.
He also referred to the challenges, including restrictions on protests, the use of force against demonstrators and questions over the autonomy of constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission.
Thackeray said Gandhi's principles remained relevant and urged people to remain vigilant against attempts by partisan narratives to weaken critical thinking.
He said democracy can only function only when citizens question those in power and hold them accountable. UNI NEP AAB
